Ethos Music Center is looking for an Executive Director

Ethos, Inc. is a vibrant nonprofit dedicated to making music accessible for children, regardless of their socioeconomic status or geographic location. Founded in 1998, Ethos is the largest community music school in Oregon, providing access to music education to thousands of youth in Portland and across rural Oregon. 

Ethos is searching for a visionary leader who understands the role music education plays in childhood development and community building, is a fearless champion for equity and inclusion, and is committed to maintaining and strengthening community partnerships with diverse organizations and individuals across the state. 

Successful candidates will have a strong background in fundraising, community outreach, and inspiring team members. Experience with budgeting and basic bookkeeping principles is also preferred.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, Ethos’ Executive Director provides management of Ethos’ personnel and annual budget of $1.3 million.  Ethos’ Executive Director has three direct reports including the Operations Manager, Director of Programs, and Rural Outreach Director.  

In particular, we are searching for: 

  • A conductor who can motivate, inspire and lead a staff of 50 and a Board of Directors comprised of 13 community professionals. Candidates must demonstrate an ability to consider different viewpoints and to develop and maintain working relationships with diverse coworkers, community members, and stakeholders. Ethos values creativity and flexibility in problem-solving.
  • A leader with an understanding of arts education programming and programmatic best practices.  This could include experience as a teacher, musician, artist, or previous experience as a leader of an arts education organization.   
  • An adept verbal communicator who can motivate groups through public speaking as effectively as a one-on-one conversation.    
  • A visionary with demonstrated success in fundraising and outreach.  Approximately 50% of Ethos’ annual budget is comprised of contributed revenue from regional and government grants, major gifts, annual events and legacy giving. 
  • A detail-oriented manager with experience in financial oversight, including business operations, cash flow management, budgeting, audit preparation and financial controls. Ethos is the recipient of two government contracts, so knowledge and understanding of federal grants management is a plus.    
  • A change agent with demonstrated experience furthering diversity, equity and inclusion. A successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a commitment to transparency and accountability with the community.  



Salary Range: $75,000 – $80,000.  Benefits include 100% medical benefits, professional development, 13 paid holidays, and PTO accrual at 8 hours a month (12 after three years of employment).
