Drumset
Ji has been teaching drum set for the past eight years and has played professionally for the past eleven. As a teacher, he places emphasis on practical technique; musicality and transferring the drum set “learning curve” of overcoming challenges into all areas of his students’ lives. Ji’s performance credits have taken him all across the United States and Canada including tenure and performances with pianist Darrell Grant’s trio, The Jerry Garcia Tribute Band, and jazz saxophonist Don Lanphere. He has received national recognition in DOWNBEAT magazine and has won various awards including a 2nd place finish for his piano trio at The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. As a student of music, Ji has studied composition and theory under Dr. Larry Zgonc, classical percussion under Dr. Joel Bluestone and Neil Duponte as well as Jazz drum set with Mel Brown, Alan Jones and Joe LaBarbera. He is currently working toward his Masters Degree in Music Therapy at Marylhurst University.
