Jackie began playing trombone at age eleven having had a very solid school music program near Detroit, Michigan. Those early experiences continue to inspire Jackie to give back and teach. In addition to playing in the school Jackie competed in AAA District competitions, and on the theatre side was in orchestras for ‘West Side Story’, ‘Annie Get Your Gun’ and other musicals. Jackie continues to play shows, most recently having been in the pit for ‘Annie’, ‘Three Penny Opera’, ‘Damn Yankees’, ‘Dress Suits for Hire’ and ‘Oliver’.
Jackie has studied with Maury Okun (former Detroit Symphony Orchestra trombonist), Jeff Uusitalo (jazz) and Phil Neumann (ancient music), both local trombonists. In addition, Jackie also plays harmonica, guitar and enjoys singing and whistling as well. Since 2005 Jackie has performed with the Carroll Rauum Jazz Band and a local brass quintet. Regarding teaching she says “I try to encourage students to play by ear and do lots of sight reading as well. Feel every note!!”
