Galen ClarkPianist, composer and teacher Galen Clark grew up in Massachusetts where his early influences ranged from Bill Evans to the Beatles. His studies have since immersed him in many musical genres such as jazz, western classical, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music, hip-hop and rock. He received the Ernest L. Wakefield Prize for Excellence in Music during high school.  In 1999 Galen headed for the west coast to attend Lewis and Clark College where he received a BA in Music Composition and graduated with honors under the tutelage of composer Forrest Pierce and pianist Randy Porter.

Galen has been teaching piano and composition in Portland for the last five years.  He has traveled extensively in South America, most recently in Brazil, where he studied various traditional Brazilian musical genres.  Galen is the co-founder of the Portland jazz group, Trio Subtonic, which consists of Galen on keyboards, Jesse Brooke on drums and Bill Athens on Bass.  Trio Subtonic released their first album, “The Aqueous,” in 2007. Galen’s studies include lessons with John Medeski and Jeff Gardner.  He has shared the stage with performers such as the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, the Lions of Batucada, Bobby Torres, John Stowell, Drew Shoals, Ken Ollis, Justin Durrie, Eric Gruber, Lesley Kernochan, Jans and Chris Mosley to name a few.
