Amy Vanacore

Director of Outreach

Amy found her dream job at Ethos in 2004, after 13 years of work in non-profit arts and education. Before moving to Portland, she was recruitment coordinator for School of Arts, outreach manager for American Conservatory Theater, and vice president of the Board of La Peña del Sur, a Latin American cultural center in San Francisco. She also managed Neighborhood Computer Centers, a nationally-recognized after-school writing program for elementary school children in San Francisco, and directed an after-school center for the Higher Achievement Program, an academic cultural enrichment program for low-income youth in Washington, DC.

In addition to her administrative work, she has 20 years of experience teaching children and adults from diverse backgrounds and extensive experience as a piano instructor and accompanist. A classically-trained pianist who also enjoys other musical genres, Amy brings the same creative energy to teaching as she does to performing. She guides students to becoming well-rounded, sensitive musicians, and she continually strives for a delicate balance between serious learning and having fun. Her comprehensive approach includes site reading, ear training, scales, improvisation, and composition.

At Ethos, Amy teaches piano and manages the Music Corps program, which provides after-school music classes at more than 25 schools and community centers annually. Born in the Bronx, and raised in Bloomville, New York, Amy holds a B.A. in from Brown University and is fluent in Spanish.
