Ethos welcomes friends from Algeria!

Earlier today, Ethos was excited to host a delegation of musicians from Algeria who are touring music programs in the United States. This delegation of Algerian artists is in the United States under the auspices of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program and hosted locally through the World Affairs Council. We’re glad to do our part in helping bring people together from all around the world through the power of music!
These artists will be performing live here in Portland at The Backspace tomorrow, September 28th at 7pm. Admission is free, so come give them a warm Portland welcome! Download the poster for the event here!
Wanted: Rural Outreach Manager for Ethos’ AmeriCorps Program!

Ethos Music Center is looking to hire an outstanding candidate for Ethos’ innovative Rural Outreach Project (an AmeriCorps program). Ethos is the first and only music school in the nation to serve as its own AmeriCorps program. We’re looking for the right person to head up this AmeriCorps program in the very near future. Familiarity with running an AmeriCorps program (or similarly federally funded program) is a definite bonus, but is not required. The person we hire will, however, be very well organized, personable, knowledgeable about music education, and able to travel extensively within the State of Oregon for site visits.

RURAL OUTREACH PROJECT MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION
ORGANIZATION: Ethos Music Center
ORGANIZATION MISSION: Ethos is dedicated to the promotion of music and music-based education for youth in underserved communities.
LOCATION: Portland, Oregon with significant travel throughout the State of Oregon
SUMMARY OF POSITION: The Rural Outreach Project Manager reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for the management of Ethos’ AmeriCorps program called the Rural Outreach Project. This includes the placement of eight AmeriCorps Members in rural sites as well as residencies, immersions, assemblies, and workshops conducted by two Roving AmeriCorps Members. The manager will also work with the Development Director and Coordinator, Instrument Coordinator, Business Manager, AmeriCorps Members, and school administrators in order to properly administer the program.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Human Resources
• Recruit, interview, and supervise Ethos’ AmeriCorps Members.
• Develop and coordinate training orientations and workshops.
• Observe classes, complete evaluation forms for members, and attend student performances to evaluate and document program quality.
• Communicate with Ethos’ AmeriCorps Members weekly and respond to their needs including but not limited to: classroom management, instructional resources, life within rural communities, instrument coordination, and how to foster sustainability in the sites.
• Train and communicate regularly with the site supervisors to help track attendance, program quality, time sheets, and AmeriCorps reporting.
• Help Instrument Coordinator and Roving AmeriCorps Members get instruments out to sites, as well as tracking what instruments go out and come back in.
• Track status of member background checks in coordination with the Director of Operations and relevant schools.
• Assist Roving AmeriCorps Members in organizing site assemblies, concerts, and fieldtrips.
Partnership Development and Management
• Promote the Rural Outreach Project to schools and communities in low population and/or underserved areas throughout Oregon.
• Design Rural Outreach Project marketing materials and update program materials (brochures, training materials, etc).
• Create and maintain documents that help with program continuity (contact lists, local resources, standard procedures in each town, etc).
• Respond to incoming requests for information from school administrators, community leaders, and teachers.
• Work with sites and Ethos’ AmeriCorps Members to develop and continually update class schedules (before and after school), and community music events.
• Review and implement Ethos and AmeriCorps policies and reporting requirements with new and existing partners and AmeriCorps Members.
• Track and document the program via photos, video, partner interviews, and media coverage whenever possible.
Management of Relationships with Large Public Institutions
• Serve as primary contact for AmeriCorps staff, and attend AmeriCorps grantee meetings.
• Maintain positive relationship with institutions required for fingerprinting and background checks
Budget Management and Reporting
• Analyze data and complete quarterly internal program evaluation reports.
• Submit required reports to AmeriCorps.
• Approve and submit monthly gas reimbursement, materials reimbursement, and housing rental costs to Business Manager and the Executive Director.
• Monitor the Rural Outreach Project budget and coordinate budget revisions with the Business Manager and Executive Director as program needs change.
• Review accounts receivable on an ongoing basis and ensure that all Rural Outreach Project invoices are paid on time.
• Develop efficient and effective systems for managing an increasing volume of data.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience with music education, school administration, and supervising. Background living in or working with rural communities. Must be very organized, personable, and resourceful. Familiarity with standard computer programs for creating materials and reporting. Experience with AmeriCorps preferred, but not required. Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree and good driving record required.
PAY/BENEFITS: Salary of $24,000 to $32,000 (DOE) for full time position (45+ hours week). Medical and dental benefits provided. Possibility of company car for use outside of Portland. Ten paid vacation/sick days per year.

POSITION OPEN UNTIL FILLED

ORGANIZATION MISSION: Ethos is dedicated to the promotion of music and music-based education for youth in
underserved communities.
LOCATION: Warm Springs, Oregon and Metolius, Oregon. Some service also carried out in Portland, Oregon.
SUMMARY OF POSITION: The Rural Outreach Project (ROP) member will live in Warm Springs, Oregon and
report to the Rural Outreach Director. The ROP member will be responsible for teaching music to students
during and after school four to five days per week. In addition, the ROP member will assist in training volunteer
teaching assistants that will help them in the classroom. Thirty six weeks will be spent in Warm Springs, Oregon
and nearby Metolius, Oregon with the remainder of the service term spent in Portland for training and evaluation.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Teach general music classes to kindergarten through fifth grade students.
2. Teach outreach workshops or classes in other sites.
3. Organize and teach after-school music classes in 1-2 instruments.
4. Recruit and train community members to be volunteer teaching assistants.
5. Meet with parents/guardians and encourage their involvement in their child’s
music education.
6. Encourage and track youth, volunteer, and parent involvement in all activities.
7. Attend Ethos instructor trainings and AmeriCorps sponsored orientation,
trainings, and meetings.
8. Complete and submit in a timely manner all Ethos and AmeriCorps required
reports and time sheets.
9. Complete 1700 hours of service over 11 months (Sept. 2011- July 2012).
MARGINAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.Organize student performances and community music events at site.
2. Provide community music classes.
3. Consult with staff on recruitment and long-term programming plans.
4. Complete one 5-10 hour project focused on environmental impact.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Good communication and experience working with underserved populations.
Background in Native American music performance or education is preferred, however other fields are also
welcome provided applicant can be a proficient teacher. Experience with youth a must. Familiarity with Native
American drumming, flute, and/or singing would be ideal, but not required. Must be organized, creative,
resourceful and self-motivated. Must have own transportation. Applicant must be able to pass strict FBI
background check.
PAY/BENEFITS: Stipend of $12,100 (taxable), free housing, and medical insurance provided. Upon completion
of service, $5,550 in educational award (to pay tuition or student loans). Members are also eligible for loan
forbearance and child care assistance. Ethos also provides monthly gas reimbursement.

NE Sunday Parkways Fundraiser- Sunday, September 25th!!

Join us for this awesome fundraising event Sunday, September 25th. If you’re not familiar with Sunday Parkways, they close down streets in Portland neighborhoods, promoting traffic-free biking, walking, jogging, and any other method in which you would like to navigate the open streets.
They are offering money to organizations who provide multiple volunteers to watch intersections during the event. Volunteers are posted at intersections, making sure vehicles that need access to the street enter and exit safely.
- If Ethos Volunteers cover at least 5-9 intersections for one shift each, Ethos receives $20/intersection.
- If Ethos Volunteers cover 10 or more intersections for one shift each, Ethos receives $25/intersection.
Shifts are 11-1:30PM and 1:45-5PM. Snacks, water, and event t-shirts are provided for all volunteers. You can select the intersection or general area you want to cover and for how long. Partner up with a friend and work an intersection together! If 10 volunteers cover intersections for both shifts, Ethos receives $500!
