Teach Music in Rural Oregon-Job/Service Opportunity in Community Music

June 9, 2010

Musicians do make this world a better place! If you want to use your music talents to improve the lives of youths, please read on.

We are embarking upon the fourth year of our exciting Rural Music Facilitator Project that brings long-term sustained music education to hundreds of students every year. Rural Music Facilitators (RMFs) are Americorps Members who are placed as a team in Southern and Eastern Oregon in order to engage the community through music classes and performances in an attempt to stimulate ongoing support of music education offerings. Last school-year we served four different towns and will be adding two additional sites (Elkton & Mitchell) this next school-year (2010-11).

We are looking for energetic, community minded musicians who can make an 11 month commitment. This is a full-time volunteer position, however services are provided only four days per week (this means 3-day weekends every weekend). There is a monthly stipend of approximately $1,072 and at the end of service there is a $5,380 education award that can be applied toward tuition or school loans. Housing and health insurance are also provided, and in some cases loan deferment is available as well.

Not only is this an opportunity to serve the community through music, but it is a great way for aspiring music teachers to gain a lot of experience in private, small group, and classroom teaching.  One of the Rural Music Facilitator’s decided to complete a second year because, in his words: I don’t think I could ever find a more supportive school staff and administration. It is a tremendous blessing.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. I attached a flier- please post where appropriate.  Also, more information on this position and Ethos Music Center can be found at www.ethos.org. This is a national search and applications have already started coming in. The deadline to apply is June 21nd. Successful applicants will be notified by July 12th and service begins mid August.
